While you can mostly see where things are headed in a broad sense, House of Usher excels at the details, from the thematically fitting way that characters are killed to the truth behind Roderick’s deadly deal. Even something as seemingly simple as an ignored text message becomes a powerfully tragic moment, full of both terror and heartbreak. That combination, of course, is exactly what Flanagan is known for, and it remains strong in House of Usher... By Andrew Webster, an entertainment editor covering streaming, virtual worlds, and every single Pokémon video game. “It’s batshit crazy in the best possible way,” Carla Gugino told Netflix during production.
Mary McDonnell as Madeline Usher
This modern take on the Edgar Allan Poe story of the same name transports fans into the world of the Usher family, led by sibling duo Roderick and Madeline. Together, the twins have headed Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, establishing an empire of wealth, privilege and power — but at a cost. The family’s dark, shady past seemingly comes to light as heirs from the dynasty begin dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from Madeline and Roderick’s youth. Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood and Rahul Kohli join newcomers (to the Flanaverse) Mary McDonnell and Willa Fitzgerald. “The Fall of the House of Usher” updates the work of Edgar Allan Poe for the era of Big Pharma, turning his most famous tales into a sprawling story of the decline of a wealthy American family.

Season 3 of the spin-off anthology series American Horror Stories releases on Oct. 26 on Hulu and FX. Each episode of the series focuses on a different scary story with a twist. Jill Masters (Izabella Miko) has not seen or heard from her ex-lover, Roderick "Rick" Usher (Austin Nichols), or her best friend (Rick's twin), Madeline "Maddy" Usher (Danielle McCarthy), for three years.
Is it a worthwhile adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s work?
Like Hill House before it, House of Usher features a good blend of slow, spooky scares and outright shrieks as Roderick recounts his complicated tale to Auguste in the musty carcass of his childhood home. Both the past and present timelines are filled with the kind of horrors you’ve come to expect from Flanagan, but he really flexes in the methodology of murder as tragedy barrels its way through the Usher family. Like some of Flanagan’s previous work — Hill House is based on a Shirley Jackson novel and Bly Manor a story by Henry James — House of Usher is the kind of adaption that uses the source material as a skeleton to build something entirely new upon. Mike Flanagan takes on the works of Edgar Allan Poe in The Fall of the House of Usher, his final spooky outing at Netflix. The eight-episode series, which premieres to the streamer on Thursday, October 12, follows the bleak, gory, and darkly comedic downfall of pharmaceutical magnate Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) and his richly diverse (and richly despicable) family. When one steps back and looks at the whole narrative of the season of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” it sags in places.
Once that initial confusion is out of the way, part of what makes it work is how each episode manages to tell its own self-contained story about the victim in question while also steadily advancing the overarching tale of what Roderick did to deserve this fate. The mystery, which seems so obvious early on, becomes more complicated and even darker than I first imagined. And there are some great individual performances that really sell it. The cast is made up of Flanagan regulars who make up for a delightfully despicable group of asshole millionaires. Because of this, it starts out slowly as the show attempts to introduce all of its various parts.
Fortunato – the Usher’s pharmaceutical company and a name plucked from Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” – is the core driver behind all of Roderick and Madeline Usher’s actions. Meanwhile, the latter’s obsession with immortality is constantly playing on the fringes, only brought to the forefront to appropriately mock AI and any place it has in storytelling or the human experience as a whole. Of course, that tragedy is more for the patriarch than it is for us, and their deaths, while instrumental to the story, aren’t really what it’s about.

Loosely based on various works by 19th-century author Edgar Allan Poe (most prominently the eponymous 1840 short story), the series adapts otherwise unrelated stories and characters by Poe into a single nonlinear narrative set from 1953 to 2023. It recounts both the rise to power of Roderick Usher, the powerful CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company and his sister Madeline Usher, the firm's genius COO, and the events leading to the deaths of all six of Roderick’s children. It stars an ensemble cast led by Carla Gugino as a mysterious woman plaguing the Ushers, Bruce Greenwood as an elderly Roderick and Mary McDonnell as an elderly Madeline.
House of Usher (also known as The Fall of the House of Usher) is a 1960 American gothic horror film directed by Roger Corman and written by Richard Matheson from the 1839 short story "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe. The movie was nominated for five Oscars and won Best International Feature Film and Best Sound.
