If you're interested in the history of Claremont, the Claremont History Image Gallery has a nice selection of old photos and links to other resources. The Ennis House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1924. The house has 27,000 perforated and patterned decomposed granite blocks.

On the right side of the screen a selector will appear similar to the left side. When you are comparing two layers, think right and left side. You may have noticed that only one 'layer' (whether that be an aerial, topo, or atlas) can be displayed at one time. To provide you with the ability to compare two different years (or layers,) you can use one of the compare utilities.

PCH is a really busy road so it won’t always feel easy to stop for the photo. The exterior of the gutted structure is almost unchanged from its previous state, including the distinctive conical roofs, chimneys, and coat of arms that now sits over the main door. The house’s contents were sold off in the mid-1950s, with a notice in The Courier on June 5, 1954, informing readers of the auction of “useful household furniture and furnishings”. Around 1881, the estate was sold by Alastair Macdonald, son of Sir John, to Hugh Tennent, the great-great-grandson of the founder of Wellpark Brewery – now known as Tennent’s Brewery.

I was in awe of the living room and so badly wanted a picture. There have been a few persons interested in restoring the once-majestic building near Loch Rannoch, but none of them have lived up to the requirements of the current owner. The building was repurposed into a school for Polish evacuee children during World War II. In 1859, after purchasing the property, the new owner had the original home torn down and the current structure erected in its place.

It’s a story of power, pride, and survival, etched into the very stones of the castle. For the last forty plus years, since 1971, we have been letting cottages for holidays. In the beginning, they were very basically furnished and holiday tenants would have to clean them for the next tenants before they left, with no housekeeping available! Over the years we have renovated and refurbished and, in several cases, gutted and totally rebuilt the interiors of estate cottages, bringing back virtual ruins to useful life.

What is the history of Dunalastair Castle?

The castle’s location is arguably one of its most alluring features. Set against the backdrop of Loch Rannoch and surrounded by the breathtaking Scottish Highlands, Dunalastair Castle offers visitors an opportunity to immerse themselves in nature’s beauty. The tranquil waters of the loch, the verdant hills, and the clear skies all contribute to the enchanting ambiance that surrounds the castle. In more recent times, Dunalastair Castle has experienced a renaissance of sorts. Painstaking restoration efforts have breathed new life into its timeworn walls, preserving its historical charm while incorporating modern amenities. Today, Dunalastair Castle stands as a luxurious retreat, offering visitors a unique blend of old-world elegance and contemporary comfort.

The Stahl House

Another house built on the site was demolished by General Macdonald in order to build the current building. TheEl Camino Citrus Assn built a packing house in Claremont in 1913. Itwas located between Olive and Spring on the south side of the Santa Femainline and was served by a 670' spur facing west and crossing theeast facing spur serving the Vanderwood lumber company. An image of theas built structure is shown in Claremont's History website (URL). It has been called the Taj Mahal of Tile and I absolutely love that the house features locally made tile! The house was built in 1929 as a vacation home for the Adamson family but eventually became their fulltime residence. After the death of the owners, the state won a lawsuit to put beach parking where the house is. The parking lot got approved but thanks to the work of locals and volunteers the house still remains. The castle is a testament to the resilience of Scottish architecture.

TheClaremont Courier newspaper published an article on the College HeightsOrange and Lemon Association packing house in its April 10, 2002edition. The article included a photo from the 1940s (Photo-Claremont Courier). This 2002 photo of the packing house was taken at the southwest corner along the former Santa Fe mainline. The house was built in 1921 to be offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat’s film studio in Culver City. In 1926 it was moved to its current location and became a private residence. I drove past the house on my way to an event and immediately turned around in order to check it out.

To select another year, click on the aerials button again and select a different year. Note that you can pan around, or zoom like we did with the map. To move the map, drag it by clicking and holding down the left mouse button (or only mouse button if on a Mac.) With the mouse button pressed over the map, move the mouse and the map will pan. Additional photos show the northwest corner along 1st Street (Photo-WM), the west end (Photo-WM), and the east end (Photo-WM). Co-Ed brand was one of the orange crate labels used by the College Heights Orange and Lemon Association.
